Happy Pride!!

As Pride comes to an end, it is incredibly important to remember that queer people exist year-round and that allyship includes more than posting a rainbow or profiting off of rainbow capitalism during pride month. Especially considering our governments’ legislation targeting the trans and queer communities.

Although it has taken years to come to terms with my identity and being out publicly this past year has not been easy, I am proud to be unabashedly myself.

What I’m reading: Red, White & Royal Blue by @casey.mcquiston

Hello and welcome to my new Instagram series where I tell you some thoughts about books I’ve recently read. I’ve wanted to share my love of reading beyond just blog posts updates and my other writing projects, so here it goes!

I just finished this book and it was a perfect summer read! I expected shenanigans and there were many romcom shenanigans. As much as I loved Alex and Henry, I have to say Zahra may be my favorite character.

Super excited for the movie adaption to come out in August!

I discovered MARINA a couple years ago through a video edit (of all things) and instantly fell in love. When I was given an album review assignment for my Pop Music Journalism class, I knew immediately that I was going to write about her latest album, Ancient Dreams in a Modern Land. I love this album for many reasons, but especially because it reclaims self-love as an act of defiance against societal expectations. Seven years prior to my anxiety breakdown, Panic! at the Disco released their third studio album, Vices & Virtues.

Music has often been therapy for me and during a difficult time of my life, I latched onto “Trade Mistakes” to find inner solace.

I wrote this piece as an assignment for my Pop Music Journalism class and it has been the most challenging and rewarding piece I have written this semester. Since May is #mentalhealthawarenessmonth today seemed like an appropriate time to share it.

I had an amazing time attending the @collegemedia National Spring Convention! I loved learning about the power of journalism and how to improve my writing skills. Some of my favorite sessions discussed student censorship, which is a topic I am incredibly passionate about.

Surprise! I’m not straight.

I’m asexual and aromantic, also commonly referred to as aro ace.

If you know me personally, most likely this is not a surprise at all. I’ve become more open about discussing my sexual orientation in the last year, but given my blog name, Ace Space, I wanted to start discussing my identity here as well.

To put it very simply, asexual and aromantic are two very different identities. Asexuality means that I do not feel any sexual attraction to people, and aromantic means I do not feel romantic attraction to anyone. Asexuality and aromantic are both very wide spectrums, and different people experience these identities differently. This post only focuses on my experience as an aro ace person.

In my opinion, there is no better way to celebrate my identity than with a blog post during my first Pride out of the closet, which you should all go check out.

I thank you all for taking the time to read this post. It is incredibly scary to me to open up about my sexuality and leave myself vulnerable to the prodding of non-aro and non-ace people. In many ways, it would have been easier to live my life in the closet because unless I told people, no one would know about my sexuality. But I would be living a lie.

I’m not doing this to please other people or to spite them. I’m doing this for past Kaitlyn, who couldn’t figure out why people wanted to have sex, who couldn’t understand why she didn’t have the desire, and who couldn’t figure out why her feelings in romantic relationships didn’t match the images she saw in the media.

Maybe if I had seen someone like me when I was younger, I would have understood myself a lot sooner. 💜💚🖤🤍

An accurate representation of my attitude towards anxiety during most of my high school experience.

If you read my post last week and are wondering about the epic conclusion, wait no longer! I uploaded the sequel post to my blog today, talking about how I actually began taking an SSRI and all the fun stuff my brain put me through during my senior year of high school.

This may be the last day of May and Mental Health Awareness Month, but this will not be the last time I talk about anxiety. Until my next upload, I thank you for all the kind words and for reading my work. It means more to me than I could ever express.

In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, here are some increasingly chaotic pictures of me with what I affectionately call my fake serotonin (also known as an SSRI).

So how did I get to this point of my life, talking about taking anxiety meds on the internet? Well, it certainly was a journey over the last two years. I’ve grown to be more comfortable with myself and am finally ready to talk about my mental health struggles.

This blog post is much more vulnerable than any of my previous content. It’s a bit scary to me in that way, but it was important to me to talk about it all the same.

Up on my blog today is the first post about discussing my mental health, specifically my anxiety. Hopefully my experiences will help you in some way. I thank you for reading.

So, today we are talking about creative burnout!! Yay!!

Ironically enough, I had this blog post planned since April and then I proceeded to struggle with burnout for the rest of my spring semester. However finals are now done and I can produce the content I want! Hopefully, this means I will be more active this summer haha.
